Mom who sold friends fake Disneyland tickets spared jail time

A British woman who sold thousands of dollars worth of fake Disneyland tickets to friends wont be heading to jail for the crime.

According to the Mirror, 28-year-old Ellie Catchesides sold several tickets to Disneyland Paris via her Facebook account. In all, Cathesides sold tickets to four people including a woman she had been friends with for 15 years.

PEOPLE ARE WAITING HOURS FOR THIS ‘BEAUTY AND THE BEAST’ SOUVENIR

Catchesides, a mother of three, claimed to have purchased the passes to the French tourist attraction but told followers she was unable to make the trek and would instead sell them for a reduced price. Those tickets which were fake were sold for 1,500 pounds (about $1,880).

One mother set up a JustGiving group for fraud victims upon discovery of the incident. Her evidence was used in Woolwich Crown Court when the case was heard March 21. Catchesides eventually admitted to four counts of fraud.

At first my friend thought it was just me it happened to but upon looking further into it I have found that I am not alone, said Catchesides’ friend and victim Jade Miller.

On one occasion a family turned up on the day ready to travel to Disneyland with children in tow to discover the heart-breaking truth.

Catchesides first claimed to be a victim of a fraud on her own and stated that she was scared to leave her home but she ultimately admitted to her role in the Disneyland scam.

You sold fake trips to people who no doubt work hard and were hoping they had a chance to go on holiday that might be enjoyable for them and their family, said Judge Andrew Lees during his closing statement.

“But it turned out you were committing a mean and dishonest offense against them and there was some persistence in what you were doing, he said.

Catchesides was sentenced to complete 140 hours of unpaid work for her role in the scam but she will not be going to jail.

California photographer creates magical ‘Disney’ princess-themed photo shoot of newborns

A California photographer created a magical photo shoot featuring six newborn babies dressed as Disney princesses.

Photographer Karen Marie captured the six enchanting newborn girls dressed as specific Disney princesses. Maries studio, Belly Beautiful Portraits in Roseville, Calif., was the scene of the stunning creation.

NO BAIL REDUCTION IN CALIFORNIA RECORDED ON INSTAGRAM

The studio chose beforehand which princess each baby would be. The two-week old newborns were dressed as Ariel, Belle, Snow White, Cinderella, Jasmine and Sleeping Beauty.

(Disneys) amazing tales of love and heroism have always been an inspiration to me, Marie told ABC News.

The publicity the photos has garnered have shocked not only Marie but the princess babies parents as well.

I hope its because I captured a small portion of the Disney story in each image and that people see the beauty in what I was trying to create, Marie said.

NOW HES SORRY! CALIFORNIA IMAM PREACHES SOUND BITES OF HATE

I love seeing the parents doting over their babies dresses as princesses and their reactions to my finished work.

The mini-princess gowns were created by Sew Trendy Accessories. Marie said the dresses can be purchased just in case other parents want to create their own baby Disney-themed photo shoot.

Marie began photographing infants after she followed her dream. She was previously a labor-and-delivery nurse, according to Babble.

The photographer said photographing six babies all together is very difficult but credited her team for helping her out.

Marie told Fox News she is planning on another photo shoot in the next two weeks that will feature Tiana, Moana, Mulan, Pocahontas, Elena and Rapunzel.

Legendary Disney Theme Park Imagineer Dies

Marty Sklar, who as the longtime creative leader of Disney Imagineering oversaw beloved attractions in some of the worlds most famous theme parks, died Thursday, the company confirmed. He was 83.

Sklar not only played an important role in contributing to the companys theme parks, he also worked directly alongside founder Walt Disney himself.

Everything about Marty was legendary his achievements, his spirit, his career, Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a news release:

He embodied the very best of Disney, from his bold originality to his joyful optimism and relentless drive for excellence. He was also a powerful connection to Walt himself. No one was more passionate about Disney than Marty and well miss his enthusiasm, his grace, and his indomitable spirit.

Sklar got his start at Disneyland a month before the park opened in 1955, where he worked on Disneyland News, which was a newspaper for the theme park. He was studying at UCLA at the time.

I was a college student, had never worked professionally, and believe me I was scared as hell, he told the DIS Unplugged Podcast. Ive told people many times since then, the good fortune is that Walt liked what I presented, and thats why I lasted 53 or 54 years at Disney.

Five years later, when he was working on publicity for the theme park, Disney told Sklar he had more important work in mind for him.

I dont know what hed seen in me, Sklar told the podcast.

Whatever he saw, it led to Sklar being involved in some of the companys biggest projects.

Sklar worked on the Disney attractions featured at the 1964 Worlds Fair, including the Carousel of Progress and its a small world.

He wrote many scripts for Walt in various shows and presentations and was referred to at times as the voice of Walt, the Walt Disney Family Museum said.

In 1966, Sklar scripted Disneys final filmed appearance, shot less than two months before the entertainment moguls death: a presentation promoting the Florida Project, which would ultimately become Walt Disney World:

The EPCOT envisioned by Disney an actual city of innovation, or the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow never came to fruition.

It was such a big idea, Skalr told D23, the companys fan club, in 2012. Not just beyond anything Disney had done, but beyond anything anyone had done.

But by 1974, Sklar was leading a team on a revamped vision that would become EPCOT Center, which opened in 1982 and is today simply called Epcot.

Marty was one of Walts most trusted advisors and helped turn his most ambitious dreams into reality, said Bob Weis, the current head of Disney Imagineering. His influence can be seen around the world, in every Disney park, and in the creative and imaginative work of almost every professional in the themed entertainment industry.

Sklar, who was named a Disney Legend in 2001, is the only Disney employee to attend the opening of all 11 of the companys theme parks around the world.

And while he retired in 2009, he remained busy.

He authored at least two books including a memoir and proved a popular speaker at Disney-related events, even attending the companys D23 Expo this month.

Sklar was given the ultimate Disney honor in 2009 when the company dedicated a window on Disneylands Main Street USA to him.

Main Street College of Arts & Sciences, it reads.Martin A. Sklar, Dean.

The location is right where he once worked on the Disneyland News.

But Sklar has also been honored in other more subtle ways throughout the park.

Sharp-eyed guests who visit the Carousel of Progress now at the Magic Kingdom in Florida might spot a note posted on a bulletin board in the final scene.

Mary called, it reads. Wants changes!

Sklar is survived by Leah, his wife of 60 years, as well as his two children and four grandchildren. The Sklar family has asked for contributions to Ryman Arts, a nonprofit that works with young artists, in lieu of flowers.

Friends, colleagues and fans all paid tribute:

As his neighbors consider a lawsuit, YouTuber Jake Paul is leaving his Disney Channel show

Only a few days after it was reported that the neighbors of YouTube star Jake Paulwere considering a class-action public nuisance lawsuitagainst him, the Disney Channel and Paul announced Saturday he would be leaving the Bizaardvark TV show in the middle of season 2.

Its unclear if the potential lawsuit has anything to do with Ryans departure from the TV show. But in a statement, the Disney Channel said the decision was mutual.

Weve mutually agreed that Jake Paul will leave his role on the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark, a Disney Channel spokesperson said in a statement, via Variety. On behalf of the production company, the cast and crew, we thank Jake for his good work on the TV series for the past 18 months and extend our best wishes to him.

On Twitter, Paul, who has more than 8.8 million YouTube subscribers, said he was looking to focus more on his personal brand.

Pauls neighbors are reportedly upset because an endless stream of fans show up at Pauls home on a daily basis, and during a recent stunt, Paul lit furniture on fire in an empty swimming pool in his backyard with flames reportedly taller than his house.

We used to be a nice, quiet street, and now were just this war zone, neighbor Maytal Dahan told KTLA 5. Were families here and were more than happy to have them live here if theyre respectful of their neighbors, but theyre not.

Responded Paul: Its terrible, its a bad situation. No, I feel bad for them. Theres nothing we can do though. The Jake Paul-ers are the strongest army out there. Dab.

This Mini Disney Princess Photoshoot Of 6 Babies Is Taking Internet By Storm, And Its Just Too Cute

Disney Is Bringing ‘Lion King’ Villain Scar Back From The Dead, So Be Prepared

If you have seen , then you know Scar is one of the most vile, disgraceful, and evil charactersto ever make his way onto our movie and TV screens. (If you haven’t seen , then what are you doing here? GO WATCH NOW.) That being said, perhaps one of the most validating moments ofany ’90s kid’s childhood was watching the malevolentmonster be attacked and killed by his tribe of loyal hyenas (seriously, it’s up there with watching Meredith wake up on an air mattress in the middle of a lake in ).Well, be prepared, folks, becauseScar from is being resurrected and, though it’s been over 20 years, I’m not quite sure I’m ready for more of his f*ckery.

It seems as if the Disney Junior showis bringing Scar back from the dead in the form of flames that emit from a volcano. Naturally, according to a video posted by BuzzFeed Entertainment, Scar is not at all interested in apologizingfor his heinous actions in the 1994 film; instead, he’s coming back to continue his attempts to break the ever-important Circle of Life and I, for one, am anxious as hell about it.

This time around the plot revolves around Simba’s son, Kion, who accidentally brings Scar (Scar’s spirit?) back to life via volcanic flames. The villain himself admits, though, he is much more than a volcano, and David Oyelowo, whovoices the new Scar assures us heis still a menacing character. I just hope Kion and the new gang don’t fall for Scar’s sneaky-ass tricks and false sincerity.

And, for those of you who were wondering whether or not Scar will get to sing in , you’re in luck: It looks as if the vindictive lionwill have a follow-up to his iconic song Be Prepared called I Have A Plan when he appears in an episode titled The Rise of Scar set to air on Disney Channel on Jul. 29 at 9:00 a.m.

I guess all we can do between now and then is try to block the trauma of Scar from our minds by listening to Hakuna Matata on repeat.

Disney Channel and Jake Paul have officially parted ways

Image: Leon Bennett/Getty Images

YouTube star Jake Paul issued a statement on Saturday announcing his departure from Disney Channel, and his role as Dirk Mann on the show Bizaardvark.

The 20-year-old social media fixture has been making headlines recently after a scathing news report showed how the home where he films elaborate YouTube videosand the hordes of fans who know his addresswas becoming too much for the neighboring community.

“Long story short my team, Disney Channel, and I have come to the agreement its finally time for me to move on from the Disney family and Bizaardvark, Paul’s note reads. At this point in time I am wanting to focus more on my personal brand, my YouTube channel, business ventures, growing Team 10, and working on more adult acting roles.

Reactions to Paul leaving the show have been mixed, with some people expecting his relationship to be severed with Disney following controversial reportsand others being sad about his departure from Bizaardvark.

Disney Channel also released a statement regarding Paul’s departure.

“We’ve mutually agreed that Jake Paul will leave his role on the Disney Channel series ‘Bizaardvark.’ On behalf of the production company, the cast and crew, we thank Jake for his good work on the TV series for the past 18 months and extend our best wishes to him,” a Disney Channel spokesperson wrote.

So long, farewell to that Disney Channel flow, I guess.

This Guy’s Perfectly Timed Proposal To His BF Made A Huge Splash At Disneyland

Looking for a story to restore your faith in love again?!

BOY, OH BOY, do I have just the adorable storyfor you.

Reddit user, Eugenius310, proposed to his boyfriendChris this past Monday on the Splash Mountain ride at Disneyland. Why Splash Mountain? Because its Chriss favorite ride, duh!

Reddit/@Eugenius310

Eugenius310himself tellsElite Daily the background behindhis adorable proposal story.

He explains, in addition to recently celebrating their one year anniversary,he and Chris were going to be moving soon in order for him to go to grad school. He knew, then, that it was the right time to pop the question.

As far as deciding where to propose went, there was no doubt in his mind that Disneyland was the perfect destination.

You see, Disneyland wasnt a random choice for their proposal destination. Eugenius310says, Chris encouraged me to get an annual pass a year ago and weve been going every month since. He continued, His favorite ride is Splash Mountain, so I knew I wanted to do it on that ride.

A couple months ago,Eugenius310saw a woman come out to her mother on Splash Mountain. He tells Elite Daily, I thought it was amazing and thats when I got the idea to propose on the ride.

Even though the proposal just took place this past Monday,Eugenius310has had it ready to rock for months.

I made the sign in February right before my brother was deployed to Japan with my niece and nephews, he said. I knew I wanted them to be a part of it because they love Chris so much!

When the day finally rolled around, the park happened to be extremely busy. ButEugenius310was pleased to find out that the line for Splash Mountain was just a short five minutes. He wanted to get it out of the way first so Chris wouldnt start getting suspicious: I was so nervous about the proposal and I didnt want him to see the sign in my pocket.

He managed to get the attention of a cast member who was more than happy to help arrange for them to get their very own log on the boat for the proposal. He says,Chris didnt realize what was going on and I was able to do the proposal without any spoilers!

Before they boarded the roller coaster,Eugenius310told Chris he wanted them to pretend to be shocked for the on-ride camera. Chris followed along, still not knowing what was going on.

But then, when they finally got off the ride, thats when the magic happened: When we got off the ride, he saw the photo and cried. I got down on one knee and asked him to spend the rest of his life with me.

And the two lived happily ever after.

Thats it. IF SOMEONE DOESNT PROPOSE TO ME ON MY FAVORITE RIDE, THEN IM SAYING NO.

OK, just kidding. I hate rides. But I want something equally romantic.

‘Descendants 2’ hits flat note in Disney sequel

(CNN)It probably requires having a child under 12 to appreciate just what big business a Disney Channel movie like “Descendants 2” is, which makes the numbing nature of this sequel puzzling. Because while the first exhibited flashes of inspiration, the second feels entirely phoned in, as if it could skate by on the title alone.

The original came outfitted in a highly marketable premise, with the teenage sons and daughters of the Disney villains — raised on an island separate from their heroic peers — being mainstreamed into the high school attended by the progeny of heroes like the Beast, Mulan and the Seven Dwarfs. Moreover, it tapped Kristin Chenoweth as Sleeping Beauty’s nemesis Maleficent, offering a Broadway belt to class up the joint.
“Descendants 2,” by contrast, completely forgoes any adult supervision, relying on the youthful stars to carry the load. And while they might have the talent for that, it then strands them within a tedious, drawn-out plot, after a jaunty opening number that isn’t equaled for the next nearly two hours.
Without belaboring the plot, Maleficent’s daughter Mal (Dove Cameron) has gone legit but feels stressed out and insecure as she prepares to attend the Royal Cotillion with the Beast and Belle’s bouncing boy, King Ben (Mitchell Hope). Her efforts to fit in finally snap, sending her retreating to the Isle of the Lost, with her pals Evie (Sofia Carson), the Evil Queen’s girl; Cruella De Vil’s son Carlos (Cameron Boyce); and Jafar’s kid Jay (Booboo Stewart) in hot pursuit.
The isle introduces a new assortment of post-pubescent demon seeds, led by Uma (China Anne McClain), a chip off the old tentacles of “The Little Mermaid’s” Ursula.
Unfortunately, the inevitable feel-good message takes forever to roll around, while the movie — directed by Kenny Ortega, a musical veteran whose credits include the first “Descendants” and “High School Musical” — gets tied up in trite romantic subplots involving various characters.
The music and scale notwithstanding, this doesn’t just play like any old episode of a Disney Channel live-action comedy, but a mediocre one at that.
Again, it would be easier to dismiss “Descendants” as kiddie fare if Disney didn’t have so much wrapped around it, including the conspicuous tie-ins to its heralded animated predecessors. Simply put, gaining access to Walt’s vaults is — or at least should be — too valuable to squander on the wrong kind of Mickey Mouse effort.
“Descendants 2” premieres July 21 at 8 p.m. on the Disney Channel, ABC and other networks.

Disney World and Mickey Mouse help foster family plan adoption-day surprise

Disney says its parks are Where Dreams Come True, but that statement was never so literal as it was for two foster kids during a recent visit to the park.

Janielle and Elijah Gilmour, ages 12 and 10, got the surprise of a lifetime in April, when foster parents Courtney and Tom Gilmour announced news of their official adoption date during a visit to Walt Disney World.

We planned it as soon as we got the [official] date, which was the Friday before our trip, Courtney tells Fox News.

What Courtney didnt plan on, however, was that Disney would catch wind of the duos plans and offer to lend a mouse-like, white-gloved hand.

DISNEY PLANNING ‘STAR WARS’ HOTEL AS ‘100 PERCENT IMMERSIVE’ EXPERIENCE

After arriving at the park from Portland, Penn., Courtney tweeted out a photo of the familys Walt Disney World celebration buttons, and the park got in touch to offer a private meet-and-greet with Mickey Mouse himself.

They got in contact me within minutes, said Courtney. I really just thought they were going to give us a free dessert, and I wouldve been completely happy with that!

Instead, Disney secretly arranged a Memory Maker package for Janielle and Elijah, with a professional photographer documenting their visit with Mickey Mouse.

When we got there, we knew it was going to happen, we just didnt know when it was going to happen, says Courtney.

In the middle of their familys meet-and-greet, a Disney employee suddenly announced that Mickey has something really special to share with you guys, and holds up a small sign telling the children of their official adoption date of May 24.

We were kind of shocked, Courtney admits. They didnt give a heads up but Janielles reaction was just so natural and pure. They said, Get the family in there! and I was like, yeah! Were the family!

Courtney recently shared footage of the sweet moment to Facebook, where it has garnered more than 1 million views in just a few weeks. She also remarked that shes thrilled the video is bringing so much attention to foster care and adoption efforts.

Courtney and Tom Gilmour had been foster parents to Janielle and Elijah for three years.

We are all happy Gilmours, Courtney tells Fox News.

5 Things To Know About Disney’s New Jasmine, Naomi Scott

It’s officially official, folks! After all the hype surrounding the upcoming live-action version of , Disney has finally cast the three of the four most importantroles (there’s still no *confirmed* word on who will play the snakey-est villain ever, Jafar, and I’m gonna assume the magic carpet will be CGI and not a real actor).

Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith have signed on to play Aladdin, Jasmine, and Genie, respectively.Obvi we’re pumped to see these charactersliterally take on as they make the leap from animation to live-action, but, naturally, we’re curious about the actors two new(ish) actors playing Aladdin and Jasmine.

Since we’ve already talked about our Aladdin, Mena Massoud, it’s time now to talk about our newest Disney princess the beautiful, talented Naomi Scott.

Here a few things you should know about Scott before she hits the big screen as Jasmine next year.

    1. She is of Gujarati Indian and British descent.

Naomi’s mother is from Uganda by way of Gujarat, India, and her father is from England. There has been some backlash surrounding her casting since Princess Jasmine is of Middle-Eastern descent and Naomi is only half Indian (really not close LOL).

    2. This isn’t her first acting gig; you may recognize Naomi as the Pink Ranger from the movie.

Scott was cast as Kimberly (Pink Ranger) in 2015 and hit theaters earlier this year in March.

3.She’s also been a Disney starlet before.

    Disney/YouTube

In 2011, Scott was in the Disney Channel Original Movie and she also starred as Megan on the British Disney Channel show .

    4. Scott is notjust an actress, sheis a musician, as well.

The singer-turned-actress was initially discovered by Kelle Bryan of the band Eternal. You can find her EP on iTunes and all major streaming services if you wanna decide for yourself whether or not she’s got the chops to hang with Emma Watson.

    5. The 24-year old actress is married to UK soccer player, Jordan Spence.

The two began dating in 2010 and were married inJune 2014. Jordan plays forIpswich Town.

For now, that’s all the goods we got. I’m excited to watch the new project develop, though, and learn more about thenewest additions to the Disney Hall of Fame (this is a fictional place made up by me, but I’d like to see it happen if any Disney big whigs read this).

Disney’s Avatar ride causes woman to pass out, according to new report on theme-park injuries

Disneys latest ride might be too realistic for some.

According to a state report, a number of medical-related issues have occurred on the 3D Flight of Passage ride at Disneys Animal Kingdom, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

In the report, the theme parks are required to disclose any ride-related injuries or illnesses that result in an immediate hospital stay of least 24 hours.

Among the list of those injured was a 31-year-old woman who felt dizzy and briefly passed out on the Pandora-themed ride on June 24.

A 79-year-old woman with a pre-existing condition also experienced medical troubles, becoming ill on the same ride June 12.

A representative for Disney didnt immediately respond to request for comment.

Flight of Passage is a 3D simulator ride that takes visitors on an aerial tour of Pandoras Navi, giving the illusion of soaring past floating mountains and careening through valleys on the back of a wild Banshee.

6 Things To Know About Disney’s New ‘Aladdin,’ Mena Massoud

Disney has finally announced the cast for the new live-action , and I am so ready. I’m really loving that all my favorite childhood movies are being remade and starring amazing actors. What a time to be alive!

Will Smith being cast as Genie caught a lot of praise, but what about our Aladdin? Mena Massoud has a big vest and fez to fill.

Here are six things you should know about Massoud to get better acquainted with the newest Disney prince.

    1. He’s Egyptian-Canadian.

Massoud was born in Egypt, but grew up in Toronto, Canada. Reportedly, Disney struggled through the casting process to find leads for this Guy Ritchie film. I think Massoud will make a fab Aladdin.

    2. There won’t be anAladdin romance IRL.

There will be no on-set romances to look forward to. Massoud’s gorgeous co-star,Naomi Scott, is married. She’s been off the market thanks to soccer player Jordan Spence since 2014.

    3. Massoud is new to the acting scene.

Massoud scored his first role in 2011. He had a very small role as an Al Qaeda operative in the show . He then landed a much bigger role in 2015 as Jared on the TeenNick series .

    4. Hehas another big role coming up.

Massoud is scoring acting gigs left and right. Massoud has agreed to star in the Amazon TV original. Big names like John Krasinski are also signed on for the show. Massoud will play a character named Tarek Kassar.

is set to premiere sometime in 2017, so we’ll be able to check out this series sooner than later.

    5. Robin Williams inspired Massoud.

While Will Smith will make an amazing Genie, it will be almost impossible to top Robin Williams in the 1992 animated movie. During an interview with The Hudsucker, Massoud named Williams as the actor who impacted him the most. Massoud said,

Robin Williams in everything he did. He was an incredibly well-rounded actor but I grew up on his role in Mrs. Doubtfire. That role by itself is very well-rounded and he goes through an amazing journey in that movie. I think it’s very underrated.

    6. He looks good shirtless.

This is important to know. His Instagram is filled with workout pictures, and he is looking mighty finefor his upcoming roles.

This may be Massoud’s first big role, but he has huge star potential. How will I be able to wait for to come out now? Not fair.

    Walt Disney’s hundred-acre masterpiece

Monday, July 17, marks the 62nd birthday of Disneyland, the worlds first theme park. More than an amusement park, Disneyland is a work of art Walts hundred-acre masterpiece.

Walt Disney was an unpretentious everyman, a farm boy from Missouri who happened to make motion pictures. His common touch enabled him to reach a broad cross-section of the American public. I dont pretend to know anything about art, he once said. I make pictures for entertainment, and then the professors tell me what they mean.

Though humble and unassuming, Walt was a creative genius. The Disney Studio was a vibrant community of artists who elevated animated cartoons to amazing heights of artistry. Walt himself was the guiding, driving force behind every cartoon and animated feature. His art was pure, free of pretense and snobbery. He aimed his creations at the public, not the critics.

Fantasy writer Ray Bradbury says that the genius of Disneyland is its ability to make the surreal real. “I shall be indebted to Walt,” he once said, “for his ability to let me fly over midnight London in his Peter Pan ride.”

Yet the critics and the international arts community applauded his work during the 1930s and early 40s. In 1937, surrealist painter Salvador Dalí journeyed to California, then wrote to his friend, poet André Breton, I have come to Hollywood and am in contact with the three great American surrealists the Marx Brothers, Cecil B. DeMille, and Walt Disney.

After “Fantasia” and “Pinocchio” lost money in 1940, Walt lost his appetite for risk-taking. By the late 1940s, he was producing movies built on safe, proven formulas animated anthology films like “The Three Caballeros” (1945) and “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” (1949), and hybrid animation-and-live-action films like “Song of the South” (1946). The arts community turned away from Walt, believing he had sold out to make kiddie films.

But Walt hadnt sold out. Since the early 1930s, hed been planning his boldest project of all. He was moving beyond the ink and paint of animation to a new medium of expression. On July 17, 1955, Walt unveiled an innovative form of three-dimensional art. Today, we call it a theme park, but its so much more than that.

Disneyland is a full-immersion multimedia experience combining motion, sound, music, light, color, fact, fantasy, and more. On opening day in 1955, Disneyland was the worlds largest art object, consisting of 85 acres of attractions, landscaping, and backstage areas. (When Star Wars Land opens in 2019, Disneyland will expand to 100 acres.) Disneyland is art that engulfs you, surrounds you, and transports you into the past, future, or realms of pure imagination.

Fantasy writer Ray Bradbury says that the genius of Disneyland is its ability to make the surreal real. I shall be indebted to Walt, he once said, for his ability to let me fly over midnight London in his Peter Pan ride.

Most reviewers panned Disneylands opening day. Only one reviewer, Will Jones of the Minneapolis Tribune, understood what Walt had achieved. He wrote, If its an amusement park, its the gosh-darnedest, most happily-inspired, most carefully-planned, most adventure-filled park ever conceived. The millions who streamed through Disneylands gates fell in love with everything Walt loved steam trains and fantasy castles, riverboats and rocket ships.

During Disneylands early years, sharp-eyed guests often spotted Walt on a park bench, eating a hot dog, or riding the attractions so he could hear peoples comments for himself. Walts set decorator, Emile Kuri, who worked on “Mary Poppins” and “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” liked to hang out with Walt at Disneyland. He and Walt would sit on the porch at City Hall and watch people entering the park.

One time, Walt and Emile saw a pair of nuns leading a group of more than twenty orphan children into the park. Walt jumped up and rushed over to them.

Im Walt Disney, he told the astonished nuns. Wait here! He left them, then returned a few minutes later, his hands filled with cash. Heres your money back, he said. And here are tickets for the attractions. Enjoy yourselves. Ive made lunch reservations at the Plaza Inn free hot dogs and hamburgers and apple pie for all of you.

Walt was an artist and a humanitarian. He loved using his park to make people happy.

Today, there are six Disney theme parks around the world, but Disneyland is the only park that literally has Walt Disneys fingerprints on it. Its his masterpiece, yet it remains unfinished. Disneyland will never be completed, he said. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.

Jim Denney is the author of “Walts Disneyland: Its Still There if You Know Where to Look“, a guide to Walt Disneys theme park legacy. He blogs at WaltsDisneyland.Wordpress.com.

Pirates of Caribbean celebrates 50th anniversary at Disneyland

It’s unique, unconventional, uncharacteriscally dark and– without a doubt– one of the most iconic theme park rides of all time.

Disneylands Pirate of the Caribbean ride has become a litmus test for theme park ride success around the world and this weekend, the original attraction in Anaheim, Calif. will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Yes, that’s fifty years of swashbuckling adventurers, imprisoned mateys and singing bar patrons.

It’s the ride not only that set the stage for a multi-billion dollar movie franchise, but since establishing itself as a must-see attraction at Disney parks around the world, it’s maintained a cult-like following for decades.

5 MAJOR CHANGES HAPPENING AT DISNEY THIS YEAR

Launched on March 18, 1967, the original “Pirates” ride featured a 1,838-foot flume with a 12-minute running time, making it one of the longest theme park rides in existence. The attraction quickly became a fan favorite and an icon for the park that had just opened two years earlier. The ride was one of the first to combine multiple elements for users to enjoy: audio animatronics (via realistic looking human robots), a double drop, theatrical effects and more.

According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the attraction was also the last one personally overseen by Walt Disney himself, who would die from lung cancer just three months before the ride opened for guests.

According to Disneyland, approximately 400 million guests have traveled on the ride following its debut a half century ago. That was due in large part to the park’s revolutionary use of the audio animatronics and stage effects, which permitted Disney to run the show more frequently than other rides– often allowing tens of thousands of visitors each day.

Since its debut, the ride has branched out globally. In addition to the origianl attraction in California, there are “Pirates” at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., another in Tokyo, one in Paris and a recently opened ride at the Shanghai Disney Resort in China.

Its also inspired countless long-form animatronic attractions from the Indiana Jones Adventure to Harry Potter and plenty of others.

Sure, there have been plenty of changes to the attraction since the 1960s, including the incorporation of new characters from the film franchise starring Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. But theres only one original– and the park will be commemorating the occasion accordingly.

‘TANGLED’ STAR CLAIMS DISNEY TURKEY LEGS ARENT ACTUALLY TURKEY

Starting Thursday, Disneyland will celebrate the milestone with pirate-themed food specials (like Jolly Roger Punch and Lost Treasure Beignets) in New Orleans Square through the weekend. Limited edition souvenirs will also be up for sale, and of course Captain Jack Sparrow will make an appearance to celebrate the anniversary.

And if excitement over the Pirates of the Caribbean world hasnt been sated yet, fans will get plenty of thrills with the a fifth installment in the popular franchise – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – comes to theaters this May.
