Disney deny negotiating with Carrie Fisher’s estate for rights to her digital image

The actor had completed filming on Star Wars: Episode VIII, but Princess Leia is also supposed to have a significant role in Episode IX

Disney have denied they are negotiating with Carrie Fishers estate for the rights to use the actors digital image in future Star Wars film, according to industry sources.

The BBCs Newsnight programme had reported that, with what might be regarded as unseemly haste, Star Wars studio Disney had opened with the actors estate over her continued appearance in the franchise.

But in a statement the Walt Disney Company said: Disney is not in conversations with the estate of Carrie Fisher at this time and any reports to the contrary are false.

Fishers likeness as the young Princess Leia in the original 1977 Star Wars was digitally rendered and appeared in the final frames of prequel Rogue One along with Peter Cushings. As filming occurred prior to Fishers death, her permission was presumably obtained. However, reports have emerged of discussions between the makers of Episodes VIII and IX, as Leia had been expected to play a significant part in both films. Apart from the technical challenge, a number of ethical considerations emerged in the wake of Cushings resurrection in Rogue One, 22 years after his death.

The BBCs use of the words continuing appearance suggested the film-makers were considering using Fishers digital image in future films, although there are also other ancillary uses, such as video games. Fisher had reportedly completed filming on Episode VIII, directed by Rian Johnson, so any significant digital resurrection would be reserved for Episode IX, which has Jurassic Worlds Colin Trevorrow on board as director.

Fans Want To Make Princess Leia A Member Of The Disney Princess Squad

After Carrie Fisher’s unexpected death last week, a group of “Star Wars” fans have mobilized online to make her iconic character Princess Leia an official Disney princess.

If you’ll remember, Disney made a deal to purchase “Star Wars” production house Lucasfilm in 2012, paving the way for the new installment of films that includes “The Force Awakens” and “Rogue One.” Disney therefore owns “Star Wars” and its stable of characters, including the beloved princess Leia Organa.

Disney also manages a very successful franchise of princess characters, from Snow White to Mulan to Tiana. Why not include Leia?

Nearly 32,000 people who signed a Change.org petition have asked the same question and come up with no good answer. The petition to make Leia an official member of the princess squad kicked off after news of Fisher’s death broke, and is already closing in on its goal of 35,000 supporters.

The petition calls for Disney to organize “a full ceremony inducting Leia as the newest Disney princess” as well as a memorial service for the late actress.

There are plenty of reasons why Princess Leia should make the cut she fights for freedom and she’s way better with a gun than any Stormtrooper. Not to mention she’s already a princess.

In February, however, YouTube user Jonathan Carlin made a video laying out the reasons why Leia would not fit the Disney princess mold. Chiefly, she’s portrayed by a real, live actress Amy Adams’ “Enchanted” character was excluded from the club for the same reason and thus forever associated with that individual. Actors’ humanity and mortality, the argument goes, makes them less suited to the timeless cult of official princess-hood.

Cody Christensen, who started the petition, told the website Geek Exchange that he’d seen Carlin’s video, but thinks “it’s time to change the rules.”

“I actually have five daughters and there are constantly princess movies playing in the background,” Christensen told the site. “We are big fans of the current princess lineup, but I think that Leia is a really strong, positive, awesome role model for my girls, and she would make a great addition.”

We agree. To sign the petition, head to Change.org.

Disney’s dilemma: digitally resurrect Carrie Fisher or write her out of Star Wars?

Andrew Garfield spent his 29th birthday at Disneyland, high as a kite

‘Star Wars’ fans petition for Leia to be the newest Disney Princess

Just days after the tragic death of actress Carrie Fisher, a petition is circulating by fans to make her Star Wars character Princess Leia Organa, an official Disney Princess.

The petition was launched by Change.Org.

It reads: It would be a wonderful way to remember Carrie and a welcoming to one of Disney’s new properties that is beloved by millions.

What we are asking is that the Walt Disney Corporation hold a full ceremony inducting Leia as the newest Disney princess as well as a special service in memory of Carrie Fisher.

Carrie Fisher, best known as Princess Leia in Star Wars, dead at 60

Disney bought LucasFilms in 2012  for $4 million, which includes the Star Wars franchise.

It might seem odd for Princess Leia to stand alongside iconic princesses such as Snow White and Cinderella, but it makes sense given the Disney theme park’s recent inclusions of more elements from the uber-popular Star Wars properties.

‘Star Wars’ family remembers Carrie Fisher

Although Princess Leia would be an exception to the princess rule, as shes not an animated character, fans are hoping Disney execs, specifically CEO Bob Igar, will make an exception.

Leia technically has the animated criteria covered, as she appeared in an episode of Star Wars Rebels last year.

While princess protagonists have long been a staple in Disney tradition since Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was released in 1937, according to Cinema Blend, the official franchise line wasn’t created until the early 2000s.

Fisher will be seen as Princess Leia one last time when Star Wars: Episode VIII premieres in theaters Dec.15, but there’s no information yet on how Leia will be handled for Episode IX set for release in 2019.

Disney could receive $50M for Carrie Fisher’s death

Disney could receive $50M for Carrie Fisher’s death.  (Reuters)

Carrie Fishers death could be a windfall for Disney.

The entertainment company, the distributor of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the next two films in the franchise, could receive $50 million thanks to an insurance policy the company took out in the event Fisher was unable to fulfill her three-film contract.

Its set to be the largest single personal accident insurance claim payout ever, according to Insurance Insider.

Fisher reprised her career-making role of Princess Leia from the original 1977 Star Wars flick for the new trilogy. The Force Awakens, released in December 2015, made $2.068 billion at the box office worldwide.

Filming on Episode VIII was already complete at the time of Fishers death on Dec. 27 at the age of 60, after she suffered a heart attack aboard a flight from London to Los Angeles.

Fisher was due to appear in Episode IX, forcing the films creators to either rewrite the plot or possibly use visual effects to insert her in the film. The latter was implemented for Rogue One, in which the late Peter Cushing reprised his role as Grand Moff Tarkin.

Disney Was 2016’s Box Office Champ, With ‘Rogue One’ Winning New Year’s Weekend

As 2016 came to a close, the year’s box office statistics were cemented: Disney reigned supreme.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” maintained the No. 1 spot. Its estimated $50 million New Year’s weekend intake brings the movie’s total domestic grosses to about $439 million, making it the second-highest-grossing release of 2016. The inaugural stand-alone “Star Wars” installment is second in yearly receipts only to the summer sequel “Finding Dory,” another Disney offering.

It’s largely thanks to the Mouse House that 2016’s overall grosses topped 2015’s by 2 percent. The record-setting $11.37 billion in North American ticket sales defies the many Hollywood sequels that underperformed. Disney boasts seven of the year’s 15 highest-grossing films. (The others are “Captain America: Civil War,” “The Jungle Book,” “Zootopia,” “Doctor Strange” and “Moana.”) Collectively, Disney made a whopping $1 billion more than the second-most-lucrative studio, Warner Bros., which released “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Suicide Squad” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

Despite an impressive year on paper, the number of people going to high-profile franchise installments compared to the lower-budgeted films that once drove the box office has grown even more divided. Of 2016’s 30 highest-grossing movies, only four are live-action originals: “Central Intelligence,” “Sully,” “Bad Moms” and “Arrival.” But this weekend offered a couple of exceptions, most notably “Fences” (which came in No. 5) and “La La Land” (No. 7). The former, directed by and starring Denzel Washington, collected $10.1 million in 2,301 theaters. “La La Land,” an Oscar front-runner starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, accumulated about $9.5 million in 750 locations, making it the year’s most successful limited release. The Damien Chazelle-directed musical is on track to have pocketed a dazzling $37 million in total by the end of Monday.

Also hitting the Top 10 as 2016 turned into 2017: the animated jukebox musical “Sing” (No. 2), the underperforming Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt vehicle “Passengers” (No. 3), Disney’s “Moana” (No. 4), the comedy “Why Him?” (No. 6) and the video-game adaptation “Assassin’s Creed” (No. 8). As of Sunday’s estimates, “Manchester by the Sea,” “Collateral Beauty” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” are competing for the final two spots.

As is the tendency during the holidays, when Oscar season is in full force, the specialty box office lit up. “Hidden Figures” made a splash on 25 screens, bringing its cumulative grosses to roughly $2.5 million, ahead of the race dramedy’s Jan. 6 wide release. The other big winner was “20th Century Women,” the Annette Bening vehicle that enjoyed a $29,000-per-screen average in four theaters.
