It’s hard to imagine (unless you’ve been through it) how difficult it is to call off a wedding.
Aside from the obvious heartbreak and logistical issues with cancelling the biggest party you’ll ever throw, there’s also a self-consciousness that comes with nixing the big day.
But for Brooke Lowry, she wasn’t going to let what other people thought stand in the way of fairy tale, so she kept her Disneyland photoshoot on the books…with just her as the subject.
After she got engaged, she immediately booked the shoot.
Disneyland, like a fairy tale, is almost like my favorite place outside of this world, and I knew this milestone in my life wouldnt be complete without incorporating such a magical place, she said.
Once the wedding was called off (amicably), she wasn’t sure how to process what she was feeling or how to proceed with her any of her plans.
But, when she was reminded of the photoshoot, she thought about lessons she’d learned from her favorite Disney princesses.
These women are kind even when others are not, she says. They are loyal and compassionate, inclusive and accepting, elegant and discerning, dreamers and doers. They look for the best in others, they bring honor to their families, and they work hard and stay true to themselves.
So she kept the photoshoot scheduled and decided she would treat herself to the lifelong dream.
Instead of being the cutesy couple out for a Disneyland date, it became the I am a Princess, long may I reign shoot. Having Disneyland itself as the backdrop was symbolic, too a place for me to begin a new dream and imagine a new narrative for myself.
The “new narrative” was helped immensely by the work of the shooter, DPark Photography.
Things didn’t work out this time around with her fianc, but she’s not letting it get her down.
He really is a lovely man. The slippers just didnt fit this Cinderella.
When I look back on those photos, I see a princess choosing to have a perfect day amidst an imperfect situation.
