Controversy comes for us all, it would seem — and
Over the weekend, Disney started selling a costume of the Polynesian god Maui (above) from the movie — a character voiced in the film by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson — on their website.
That costume looks like this (below):
The character’s traditional, tribal tattoos — and dark skin — are obviously being used as costume inspiration here, and that’s leaving some people to question whether this was an acceptable decision by Disney!
Activists are taking to Twitter to complain and come together over the issue, as you can see (below):
As a Poly I support our folk involved in #MOANA. But this? NO.Our Brown Skin/Ink’s NOT a costume. @DisneyMoana pic.twitter.com/X0pacppAqV

cosplaying things like moana is one thing – cosplay shouldn’t be limited to what ur race is. but literally wearing a brown skin costume? no

1. Its deadass brown skin…as a costume??
2. some islander tattoos are very sacred, this costume is literally mocking our traditions.

Interesting.
Obviously, Polynesian people don’t want to be portrayed as just some Halloween costume — especially considering the tribal tattoos have sacred, specific meanings.
What do U think, Perezcious readers?!
